'(5 Jul 2000) Italian/Eng/Nat STORY: GAY FASHION LOCATION: ROME DATE: 4TH JULY 2000 Thousands of gays, bi-sexuals, transexuals and straight people turned out for the Gay Fashion Show at Rome\'s Circus Maximus, one of the eternal city\'s major historical sites. Titled \"A Mirror for Narcissus\", the show included designs by Renato Balestra, Raffaella Curiel, Antonio D\'Amico, Egon Fustenber , Paul Cry and Fiorella Mancini. The event was a taste of the upcoming Gay Pride March to be held in Rome on Saturday. For the Rome authorities and security forces, it was a useful advance test of their safety plans. The art director Vladimir Luxuria, who also acted as presenter for the evening, enthused about the event, says he would like everyone to live together accepting each others differences. He came on stage wearing designs by Fiorella Mancini, backed by the Rome\'s Gay Pride hymn (\"No one can judge us\"). The crowd included several designers. Gilbert Baker, who created the Rainbow Flag in 1978, arrived from San Francisco, pleased to see Gay Pride events in Rome, in spite of the controversies which arose with the Vatican. Renato Balestra\'s Rainbow dress was also on show, complete with the colours of the gay movement. One of the highlights of the show was unveiled towards the end, a dress inspired by the Colosseum by Andrew Mac Kenzie - a timely reminder that gays will march to the famous Rome landmark on Saturday. The two hour event also included song, dance and cabaret. The show finished with a heartfelt appeal for an end to both the death penalty and sexual discrimination.
