'Paris Fashion Week Chanel Pleated Dress How to Draw a Fashion Illustration Part 2 Painting with a Gouache Wash- This Chanel dress had a lot of detail, so I used a combination of techniques to render the piece. I also used a pretty cool technique that allows you to apply color and soften it so it looks like you airbrushed it! You can skip it to 9:17 to view this technique. Doing a gouache wash will require you use a natural fiber brush such as sable. This is due to these fibers being able to hold more water than synthetic fibers. There may be some synthetic brush options and I have tried them with disappointing results. This technique is also very opposite from the more popular \"puddling\" of color that most illustrators do, specially when painting makeup. I am not fond of making circles for blush spots, though I used to do them! I like the softer grading of blush and shadows of facial features. I also use a Japanese ink pen to outline the piece. I really like doing this as it gives the painting a modern look. Also if you rather have the piece be more colorful, you can use less water. Wash tend to , well, wash the color to the point it looks like watercolor. -How to use water soluble graphite- The water soluble graphite is very easy to use. Use it like you would any pencil and accentuate areas with bold dark strokes. If you intend to use its water soluble qualities, I usually go a little harder with pressure in order to mark the areas I wish to \"wash\". Because your piece is in color, you will have to decide where your piece would benefit from having an almost black shadow wash. Again, because it is water soluble, you can use water to control the intensity of the graphite by adding more water to lighten it, or use an almost dry brush for a dark application.
